Home Sweet Home

I have witnessed this vehicular arrangement many times while travelling in North American national parks and it strikes me as ironic that even when “getting away from it all” we are compelled to bring it all with us.  The motorhome-SUV combo is a common site in the parks and I find them an interesting photographic study of our notions of “home”, “basic needs” and “happiness”.  This image reminds me of Henry Thoreau’s words from Walden, where he laments the “misfortune” of all the stuff we accumulate in life.  “How many a poor immortal soul have I met well nigh crushed and smothered under its load, creeping down the road of life, pushing before it a barn seventy-five feet by forty, its Augean stables never cleansed, and one hundred acres of land, tillage, mowing, pasture, and wood-lot!  The portionless, who struggle with no such inherited encumbrances, find it labor enough to subdue and cultivate a few cubic feet of flesh.”

The Dutch Star (and Jeep SUV) were seen in Kluane National Park, Yukon Territory.
